AREVA NP has installed an advanced load following control (ALFC) system at the Goesgen nuclear power plant (NPP) in Switzerland to automatically adjust electricity generation.

Using the system, Goesgen NPP will be able to regulate its generation as per the requirement of the grid operator.

In addition, the system automatically changes the plant’s output between 50% and 100% of its installed capacity, which can be carried out with power increases of up to 30MW a minute.

AREVA NP’s ALFC solution is equipped with upgraded reactor control system software, a comprehensive test series, and operator training materials to ensure safe and proper operation.

“So far, AREVA NP has delivered its ALFC technology to Germany-based nuclear power plants Philippsburg 2, Isar 2, Brokdorf, and Grohnde.”

AREVA NP instrumentation and control projects representative Carsten Dueweke said: “The intermittent electricity generation of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar increases the need for balancing power.

“Our ALFC system enhances the capabilities of nuclear power plants to deliver such services and to perform a stabilising role in the power grid.”

So far, AREVA NP has delivered its ALFC technology to Germany-based nuclear power plants Philippsburg 2, Isar 2, Brokdorf, and Grohnde.

Earlier this week, AREVA NP secured a contract to provide its filtered containment venting system (FCVS) to seven nuclear reactors operated by Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).

Deliveries of the FCVS have already begun and are expected to be completed by 2020.
