Power equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) has commissioned a 500MW unit at the Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (STPS) in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Located at Vindhyanagar in the Singrauli district of the Indian state, the power generating facility had six of its 500MW units previously commissioned by Bhel.

Bhel said: "With the commissioning of this unit, Bhel has now commissioned seven sets of 500MW aggregating to 3,500MW, the highest by Bhel in a power project."

"The Bhel-manufactured sub-critical sets have demonstrated a better operating heat rate resulting in less coal consumption per unit of generated power."

Under the terms of the contract awarded by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Bhel’s scope of work included design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam generator and steam turbine generators at the facility.

The firm was also responsible for setting-up the related auxiliaries at the plant, along with its controls and instrumentation works.

Bhel had manufactured equipment for the project at its facilities in Trichy, Ranipet, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Bhopal.

Erection and commissioning was undertaken by Bhel’s power sector unit for the western region.

The coal-based facility is one of the largest in the country with an installed capacity of 4,760MW. NTPC sources coal for the power production plant from Nigahi mines.

In addition to being complaint with Central Electrical Authority standards, the Bhel-manufactured sub-critical sets have demonstrated a better operating heat rate resulting in less coal consumption per unit of generated power.

The Indian manufacturer has already commissioned 76 of its 500MW sets in the country, and has made power plants with a cumulative capacity of more than 2.4GW operational.
