DuPont has commenced operations at its new Cooper River Kevlar manufacturing facility in South Carolina, US.

The $500m plant will result in an initial 25% increase of overall global production capacity for Kevlar.

The unit will initially produce products that support DuPont’s three primary technology platforms; DuPont Kevlar AP, DuPont Kevlar KM2 Plus and DuPont Kevlar XP.

The products can be used in applications including fibre-optic cables, oil and gas, and automotive, aerospace, tyres and other personal protective equipment.

Commercial supply is scheduled to begin by the end of 2011.
