EnBW files application to decommission Heilbronn 5 and 6 hard coal units

EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg has submitted an application to the Bundesnetzagentur (German Federal Network Agency) and the TransnetBW transmission system operator (TSO) to decommission its Heilbronn 5 and 6 hard coal units.

EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg has submitted an application to the Bundesnetzagentur (German Federal Network Agency) and the TransnetBW transmission system operator (TSO) to decommission its Heilbronn 5 and 6 hard coal units.

The notification to the Federal Network Agency and the TransnetBW TSO follows EnBW's supervisory board's approval of the proposed resolution of EnBW's board of management to decommission the two hard coal units at the next possible statutory date.

TransnetBW TSO, in coordination with the Federal Network Agency, will now examine the Heilbronn power plants' system relevance and determine the duration of potential system relevance.

Connected to the grid in the mid-1960s, the Heilbronn 5 and Heilbronn 6 hard coal units have an output of 125MW each. Heilbronn 7, the third unit at this power plant site, is not affected by the company's decommissioning decision.

"TransnetBW TSO will now examine the Heilbronn power plants' system relevance."

Decommissioning of the two units, or expiry of the units' system-relevance, will affect approximately 80 jobs. The company said that it will arrange appropriate redundancy and other social measures for the affected employees.

In February 2014, EnBW announced that it is planning to decommission the two hard coal units at the Heilbronn site as a result of feasibility studies of its conventional power plant park.

In July 2013, EnBW notified the TSO and the German Federal Network Agency of its plans to decommission a total of four power station units with a total output of 668 MW at its Marbach and Walheim sites. This notification was declined by the Federal Network Agency in December 2013.
