Southern California Edison (SCE) has started installation of smart electric meters in the Antelope Valley and surrounding communities in California as part of the Edison SmartConnect programme.

The Edison SmartConnect meters are digital, two-way communicating devices, which replace traditional mechanical meters.

SCE began introducing programmes and services earlier this year, which allows customers to make better-informed decisions about their energy use.

The Antelope Valley communities will get access to the same smart meter-enabled programmes and services in the months following the installations, which will mostly be carried out by the electric utility in partnership with Corix Utilities.

The company installed the first smart meter in the Edison SmartConnect programme in September 2009 in Downey and will undertake more throughout 2012 for nearly five million customers.
