Koeberg nuclear power station has announced its Unit 1 will be taken offline for a planned refuelling outage.

Having been in operation without any interruption since February 2015, the plant will be taken offline for nearly one month.

"During these routine outages, one third of the used nuclear fuel is replaced with new fuel."

Koeberg's Unit 2 is currently operating optimally, delivering 930MW of power to the national grid. Each of the two units are shut down one at a time for refueling, inspection, and maintenance work every 15-18 months.

Routine maintenance checks are part of Eskom's strategy to avoid having both the units out of service at the same time. During these routine outages, one third of the used nuclear fuel is replaced with new fuel.

Eskom performs maintenance, plant modifications, inspections, and statutory work to ensure international safety standards are met.
