US-based nuclear power company NuScale Power has signed an agreement with Polish copper and silver producer KGHM Polska Miedź to begin deploying NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

The agreement comes after the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the use of SMR technology as a means of repurposing existing coal-fuelled power plants and nuclear plant implementations.

Under the terms of their latest agreement, NuScale and KGHM will work together to help install SMR technology in Poland.

The companies plan to deploy the first NuScale VOYGR power plant in the country in 2029.

The VOYGR plant is a scalable power plant solution that can be offered in four-module VOYGR-4 (308 MWe), six-module VOYGR-6 (462 MWe) or 12-module VOYGR-12 (924MWe) configurations.

NuScale Power president and CEO John Hopkins said: “In the global race to rapidly decrease emissions worldwide, NuScale’s technology presents the perfect solution to reach this goal while simultaneously bringing economic prosperity to host countries.

“NuScale is proud to partner with KGHM, an experienced innovation leader, and we are excited to work together to bring forth the next era of advanced clean energy deployment and confront the climate crisis.”

The companies will initially work to identify potential project sites, define project planning milestones and estimate project costs.

KGHM is assessing NuScale VOYGR plants as a coal-repurposing solution for its existing power plants.

It is also exploring additional deployment opportunities to generate carbon-free energy for its operations and other industrial uses.

KGHM Management Board president Marcin Chludziński said: “KGHM is proud to lead the initiation of a 100% carbon free energy project, delivering on its commitment to lead efforts to decarbonise.

“The SMR technology will increase the company’s cost efficiency and transform the Polish energy sector.”

NuScale Power’s SMR technology is the first and only SMR to have received design approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
