Prysmian, an Italian cable manufacturer, has secured a €900m ($952.8m) contract to supply cables for Clean Path New York (Clean Path NY), a 3.8GW renewable energy project in the US.

Prysmian will design, manufacture, construct, install and commission the Clean Path NY project’s 400kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) single-core cable system, conditional upon the project securing notice to proceed in spring 2024.

To be built with a total investment of $11bn, Clean Path NY is being developed by the New York Power Authority, energyRe and Invenergy.

The project will comprise 1.2GW of solar and 2GW of onshore wind, generating 7.5 million megawatt-hours of clean energy annually, and a new 175-mile (281km) underground and submarine transmission link.

The energy generated will meet the needs of 1.5 million homes in New York.

Prysmian Group projects business unit executive vice-president Hakan Ozmen stated: “We are proud to support Clean Path New York in meeting New York State’s ambitious climate goals to be 70% carbon-free by 2030. Clean Path New York is one of the largest transmission infrastructure projects to be executed in New York State and is one the first 400kV HVDC interconnectors to be built by Prysmian around the world.

“This agreement reinforces Prysmian Group’s leading position in the submarine and land cable market and underlines both our continued role in and our commitment to the North American energy transition.”

Invenergy transmission executive vice-president Shashank Sane stated: “Through this agreement with Prysmian, Clean Path NY is securing technology to deliver electricity New Yorkers can count on.

“High-voltage direct current transmission can reshape our country’s power grid by providing unmatched reliability and resilience. Despite industry headwinds, this agreement represents progress toward New York’s climate and sustainability goals.”

Clean Path NY will generate more than 20% of New York’s electricity and help to avoid 49 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions by 2040.

The project will bring in more than $4bn in economic development for the state, while creating more than 8,300 jobs.

Clean Path NY signed an agreement with New York State Energy Research Development and Authority in November 2021 and the project was approved by the State Public Service Commission in April 2022.

It is expected to begin construction in 2025.
