British oil and gas giant Shell has announced the launch of a green energy business to serve the residential power market in the US.

Named Shell Energy Solutions, the business provides electricity generated from renewable sources to eligible customers in Texas.

It will offer fully renewable electricity plans to customers in competitive areas of the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid.

Shell Americas Renewables and Energy Solutions vice-president Glenn Wright said: “We’re excited about this entry into the residential electricity market and look forward to providing a suite of 100% renewable electricity plans to customers across the state.

“Shell is widely known for its leadership in developing and delivering low-carbon solutions for commercial customers.

“Now, backed by our extensive energy trading and marketing expertise, we can offer new products to residential customers who want sustainable, innovative energy plans for their homes.”

According to a company statement, the launch of Shell Energy Solutions builds on Shell Energy North America’s acquisition of MP2 Energy in 2017.

Shell Energy Solutions will also offer incentives to attract new customers, including offering free charging to electric vehicle drivers during off-peak hours.

Customers with solar panels on their houses can also export excess solar power to the grid to receive credit.

At present, Shell Energy serves around 1.5 million customers across nine countries.

The launch of the business in the US is part of the company’s plan to develop a material integrated power business aligned with its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Last month, Shell partnered with Dutch energy company Eneco to participate in offshore wind tenders for the Hollandse Kust (west) (HKW) VI and VII lots located offshore from the Netherlands.

The two companies will submit their bids through their two joint venture firms, Ecowende and SchakelWind.
