Siemens Energy has been selected to provide gas and steam turbine technology for the 2.6GW Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The order covers the provision of three gas turbines, two steam turbines, five generators and related auxiliary systems for the combined cycle facility.

This will be the third power plant at the Taweelah site to be equipped by Siemens Energy.

The new facility is intended to support greater flexibility in electricity generation, help maintain grid stability and aid the integration of larger volumes of renewable energy into Abu Dhabi’s power network.

The plant is also designed to potentially accommodate future carbon capture and storage infrastructure, aligning with the UAE’s objective to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Development of the project is being led by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, alongside an international consortium that includes Saudi Arabia’s Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company and Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries.

The contractor role for engineering, procurement and construction has been given to the China Energy Engineering Group.

Once operational, the electricity produced will be procured entirely by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company.

The components for the new power station will be produced at Siemens Energy’s manufacturing locations worldwide.

The SGT5-9000HL gas turbines and SST5-5000 steam turbines will be built in Berlin and Muelheim, Germany, while the SGen5-3000W and SGen5-2000P generators are to be assembled at the company’s Charlotte facility in the US.

Siemens Energy executive board member Karim Amin said: “As energy systems around the world face growing demand and pressure to deliver both reliability and flexibility, the role of dispatchable gas-fired power generation is more crucial than ever.

“We are proud to contribute our technologies and expertise to the Taweelah C project, including the first HL-class gas turbine in the UAE, with industry-leading performance.

“This milestone builds on a long-standing legacy of supporting the UAE’s energy security and economic development and reinforces our commitment to strategic partnerships that serve the country’s ambitions.”

Last month, Siemens Energy signed an agreement with Mai-Liao Power to provide major equipment and long-term services for a forthcoming 2.4GW gas-fired combined cycle power facility in Taiwan.
