SSE Renewables has selected Montrose Port on Scotland’s Angus coast as the preferred site for the operations and maintenance base for its planned 1.4GW Berwick Bank B offshore wind farm.
This decision is expected to create 100 new full-time roles.

Berwick Bank B is part of SSE’s larger 4.1GW Berwick Bank Wind Farm project, situated around 38km off Scotland’s east coast in the outer Firth of Forth.
Technicians and engineers will be recruited to oversee the day-to-day running of the wind farm over its more than 35-year expected lifespan.
Alongside the permanent operational roles, roughly 30 construction jobs will be supported during the refurbishment of the port authority’s office facilities to serve as the new base.
The company announced the development at an event at Montrose Port attended by Scotland First Minister John Swinney and UK Government Energy Minister Michael Shanks.
Shanks said: “This is a key milestone for Berwick Bank, which, when built in full, would be the world’s largest single offshore wind farm.
“SSE’s plans for Montrose Port show what the UK Government’s drive for clean power can deliver for Scotland: around 100 skilled jobs that could last for decades, investment in our ports and opportunities for local businesses.”
Montrose Port’s South Harbour will house the new operational hub, with the roles locally based and aimed at boosting employment and economic activity in Montrose and the wider Angus region.
In January 2026, SSE obtained a 20-year contract under the UK Government’s contracts for difference (CfD) scheme for 1.4GW of generation from Berwick Bank B.
The company expects to reach a final investment decision (FID) on the project in 2027.
At full capacity, the 4.1GW Berwick Bank project could become the world’s largest offshore wind farm, generating enough electricity to power around 6.5 million UK homes each year and meeting more than 6% of the country’s current electricity demand.
Future job numbers at Montrose Port could rise to nearly 300 full-time positions if Berwick Bank’s additional A and C phases win support in future CfD rounds and proceed to FID.
SSE already works with Montrose Port as the operational base for the Seagreen offshore wind farm.
In August 2025, SSE secured the Scottish Government’s approval for the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm.
