German municipal utility Stadtwerke Kiel has opened a new and flexible gas engine-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

Located on the eastern shore of the Kieler Förde inlet in northern Germany, the CHP plant is a replacement for the decommissioned coal-fired power plant.

Stadtwerke Kiel ceased operations at its 323MW coal-fired power station in 2015 to transition from coal-fired electricity generation to natural gas.

The coastal power plant was jointly developed by gas engine designer and manufacturer INNIO and construction and engineering company Kraftanlagen München (KAM).

For the power plant, INNIO provided the gas engines and its engineering expertise, while KAM served as the general engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and was responsible for the commissioning of the power plant.

In addition, KAM was responsible for the auxiliary buildings, as well as the heat storage and electrode boiler integration.

INNIO has installed 20 Jenbacher J920 FleXtra gas engines with a capacity to generate a total electrical output of 190MW and a thermal output of 192MW.

The electricity and heat generated by the power plant is transmitted into the electricity grid and district heating network that delivers the heat to more than 73,000 households and facilities in Kiel, Germany.

The electric power generated is transferred to Kiel’s 110KV power grid.
