Strata Clean Energy, a renewable energy developer, has begun construction on its 255MW/1.02 gigawatt hours (GWh) Scatter Wash battery storage complex in Phoenix, Arizona, US.

Set to be operational by April 2025, the Scatter Wash facility will feature batteries with the capacity to store and supply electricity to 250,000 homes for four hours daily for 20 years.

The primary objective of Scatter Wash is to provide Arizona Public Service (APS) customers with reliable energy, support the increased demand for power and store substantial amounts of renewable energy generated from solar power plants on the grid.

This stored energy will be utilised during peak times, especially in the hot summer months when electricity demand is at its highest in Arizona.

Strata Clean Energy president Josh Rogol said: “This groundbreaking demonstrates a considerable advancement in large-scale sustainable energy solutions in a major growing metropolitan area, underscoring Strata’s dedication to addressing critical grid challenges.

“In showcasing our dedication to utility clients like APS and Arizona homes and businesses, we continue shaping the future of energy storage by ensuring grid reliability and driving progress towards broader decarbonization and economic development goals through local jobs and investment. It exemplifies our dedication to a more sustainable future.”

In 2023, Strata entered into a 20-year tolling agreement with APS for the Scatter Wash battery storage complex.

The agreement was the result of the All-Source request for proposal (RFP) conducted by APS in May 2022.

The RFP was issued to meet the growing demand for affordable and clean electricity from residential and business customers.

Strata will be responsible for the construction, ownership and operation of the Scatter Wash battery storage complex.

In April 2023, Mortenson was chosen as Strata’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner for the project.

The project will utilise Tesla‘s Megapack 2XL, an integrated battery system featuring advanced technology, software and power conversion systems.

The battery system is claimed to efficiently store and dispatch electrical energy to and from the grid during optimal periods.
