Sungrow has announced plans to partner with ENGIE and Elecnor to advance the 150MW/300MWh Hazelwood battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Victoria, Australia.

Sungrow Australia, a Sungrow subsidiary, will provide the technology, while Elecnor will act as the balance-of-plant (BOP) contractor.

The BESS is set to enter commercial operations in 2028.

The project plans to use 66 units of Sungrow’s ST5015-UX BESS from its PowerTitan 2.0 series.

It will also use 33 SC6900UD-MV power conversion system (PCS) inverters and the company’s EMS3000 smart controller.

The new system is designed for utility-scale deployment and will offer high energy density, liquid-cooled thermal management, advanced battery monitoring, and power conversion features to support long-term reliability and safety.

Hazelwood BESS 2 will use grid-forming technology designed to help maintain voltage and frequency stability and respond quickly to changes in network conditions.

The project partners also expect these capabilities to support the integration of variable renewable generation as its share of electricity supply increases.

The system aims to provide flexible energy resources for Victoria and the National Electricity Market (NEM) by storing electricity during periods of low demand and delivering it when needed.

Hazelwood BESS 2 represents further development in large-scale battery storage initiatives in Australia, highlighting the involvement of international suppliers such as Sungrow in the country’s move towards an evolving energy system.

Sungrow Australia managing director Thomas Hou said: “The Hazelwood BESS 2 represents an important step in advancing grid-forming energy storage in Australia.

“Through our collaboration with ENGIE, we aim to bring advanced energy storage technology to support grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy.

“We look forward to contributing our expertise and supporting the continued development of a more resilient energy system in Victoria.”

In August 2026, Sungrow was chosen by Verano Energy to supply a 152MW/606MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Observatorio project in Chile.
