Norway-based offshore communication network operator Tampnet has been contracted for the supply of 4G/LTE network to Ørsted’s offshore power plant, Hornsea One.

Located 120km off the Yorkshire Coast in the UK, Hornsea One will be the largest offshore windfarm in the world when fully operational in 2020.

Tampnet North Sea managing director Per Atle Sørensen said: “We are thrilled to be awarded this contract. Not only is it the world’s largest offshore wind farm, it is also the very first wind farm that Tampnet supplies with 4G/LTE coverage, a true milestone for us.”

The offshore communication network operator has already installed base stations on the reactive compensation station for secure 4G coverage between shore and the wind farm area.

Additionally, base stations have been deployed on the three substations. This will enable secure 4G coverage for all construction vessels in the windfarm area and Ørsted’s service operations vessel Edda Mistral.

Hornsea One will consist of 174 Siemens Gamesa 7MW turbines. Ørsted announced the first turbine at the offshore power plant started producing electricity in February 2019.

Hornsea One construction manager Stefan Hoonings said: “Hornsea One keeps pushing the boundaries. It’s the furthest a wind farm has ever been built from shore so we’ve had to introduce new ways of doing things, and the superfast Tampnet internet connection offshore, during the construction phase, is a great example of that.

“Initially we were able to piggy-back on an existing Tampnet network on oil and gas platform over 50km north of our project site.

“We’ve created a fully functioning office offshore, enabling us to base the site coordination and planning teams on site, and thanks to the high-speed connection we can fully digitalise our operations.”
