VSB Uusiutuva Energia Suomi Oy, the Finnish subsidiary of Germany-based renewable energy firm VSB Group, has obtained permission to build its Karahka wind farm in Finland’s Northern Ostrobothnia region.

Located 5km north of Oulainen, the 170MW wind farm will be spread across almost 2,300ha of land and equipped with 25 wind turbines.

Construction works at the site will begin next year, with the wind turbines due to be delivered and erected in 2024.

The Karahka wind farm is scheduled to come online at the end of 2024.

VSB Uusiutuva Energia Suomi Oy managing director Seppo Tallgren said: “The key to the success of the project is the positive attitude adopted by the town of Oulainen, other authorities and landowners.

“The cooperation with decision-makers, leading public officials and other stakeholders has been very pleasant and has run smoothly.”

VSB began the planning process for the Karahka wind farm in 2016 after combining two wind energy project sites. In 2017, the town of Oulainen adopted a zoning agreement for the area.

The local master plan and environmental impact assessment works for the project began in 2019 and the whole planning process was completed last year.

VSB Uusiutuva Energia Suomi Oy’s first wind farm, Juurakko, is currently under construction on Finland’s west coast.

With a total capacity of 39.9MW, the Juurakko project is expected to become operational later this year.

VSB Uusiutuva Energia Suomi Oy Projects head Katja Tuukkanen said: “As in all VSB projects, we have been actively engaged in an extensive dialogue and will keep the public well-informed about how construction is progressing at Karahka.”

VSB Group offers a range of renewable energy value chain services, including project development, asset management and technical and commercial operational site management.

In January 2020, Partners Group acquired an 80% stake in the company on behalf of its clients.
