Detroit-based utility DTE Energy is in discussions to deliver more than 3GW of electricity to support the expansion of Big Tech's data centres. Big Tech is defined as the most prosperous and influential technological companies in the IT industry: Alphabet (Google), Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft.

The company aims to finalise its first contract by the end of 2025, as reported by Reuters.

Since early 2024, US power companies have been receiving requests to supply electricity to the energy-intensive data centres required for the rapid expansion of AI within the tech sector.

To meet these super-sized power requirements, which are driving consumption levels up, utilities such as DTE are increasing investments in infrastructure.

DTE Energy chief operating officer Joi Harris stated: "Our intention is to get a deal done by the end of the year, and we are making nice progress.”

The developers of the data centres requiring 3GW of electricity have already obtained the necessary land and permits for their facilities.

DTE is in preliminary discussions to provide an additional 4GW of capacity for data centres, and plans to leverage its existing infrastructure while also building new battery storage to support businesses.

She also indicated that in the long run, new natural gas-fired power generation plants and other essential infrastructures may be necessary to satisfy the demand from data centres.

For the second quarter (Q2) ended 30 June 2025, DTE’s electric segment reported higher earnings of $318m to a profit of $279m in 2025

In April, DTE Energy concluded the construction of the Pine River solar park in Michigan, an 80 MW project featuring 80,000 solar panels, which will produce enough clean energy to power 20,000 homes.
