Prysmian Group, a company specialising in energy and telecom cable systems, has secured a framework agreement with Terna, Italy's transmission system operator, aimed at reinforcing the Italian electricity network.

The contract spans three years with an option for an additional year and is valued at up to €382.5m ($449m).

Under this agreement, Prysmian will provide high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables as well as maintenance services for high-voltage cable systems.

Terna has committed to purchasing at least 50km of high-voltage cable annually under the arrangement but may increase its orders depending on operational needs.

Prysmian Europe CEO Marcello Del Brenna said: “We will work closely with Terna to support enhancements in reliability and resilience of the Italian power grid and together make a significant impact to progress the energy transition, while supporting the overall Italian economy, as we manufacture these cables at our Pignataro Maggiore factory in Caserta.”

The grant highlights Prysmian's role in advancing electricity transmission to meet growing demand and facilitating the energy transition.

This strategic partnership aligns with Terna's strategy for the development and modernisation of the national transmission grid, which supports the goals outlined in the European Green Deal and the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan.

Prysmian will build these cables at its advanced manufacturing facility in Pignataro Maggiore, Campania, which recently benefitted from more than €20m in investment to boost production capacities, including those for high-voltage cables.

Italy country manager Fabio Zucca said: “Our long-standing positive relationship with Terna comes from a spirit of shared goals, collaboration and commitment to make a real difference for the millions of end users across Italy. This framework agreement is an important commitment, from both Prysmian and Terna, at a critical moment in the energy transition, and we are proud to have been entrusted with this significant award.”

In December 2024, Prysmian signed a framework agreement with Réseau de Transport d’Électricité, the transmission system operator in France, to provide submarine power cable connections.

The links will facilitate the integration of two offshore wind farms, the Fos project and the Narbonnaise project, into the French transmission grid.
