SUNOTEC Germany wins SEAC contract for multiphase battery storage project

The initial stage will deliver 20MWh of storage capacity, with a wider four-phase plan aiming for 230MWh by 2028.

SUNOTEC Germany has received a contract from SEAC Group to build the first phase of a battery energy storage system (BESS) programme in Germany.

The initial stage will deliver 20 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity, part of a wider plan that aims to reach up to 230MWh across four phases by 2028, subject to technical and regulatory assessment.

SEAC Group has internally approved the second phase, which will add another 20MWh, with contractual amendments expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2026 (Q1 2026).

The third phase, approved in principle and pending grid connection agreements, targets an additional 30MWh and is scheduled for potential award in Q2 2026.

The potential 160MWh final phase capacity is still under review as feasibility studies continue.

The overall initiative aims to increase the adaptability of renewable energy systems and support stability in the German power grid.

BESS projects enable electricity produced from sources like solar to be stored and supplied according to demand patterns, helping to manage fluctuations in production and consumption.

These systems are increasingly integrated into Germany’s evolving energy landscape as reliance on renewable power expands.

SUNOTEC Germany managing director Christian Salzeder said: “The SEAC Group has entrusted us with the first phase of construction for this ambitious programme, marking an important milestone for SUNOTEC Germany in the large-scale battery storage segment.

“Battery storage is a key enabler for a resilient and flexible energy system, and this partnership demonstrates how experienced industry players can jointly deliver solutions that support the long-term success of renewable energy.”

SUNOTEC brings previous experience from its operations in Bulgaria, where it has developed and managed utility-scale BESS projects supporting grid performance and renewable energy integration.

The company is enhancing its activities in Germany as part of a broader European strategy focused on expanding large-scale energy storage capabilities.

SUNOTEC’s partnership with SEAC Group follows its established approach in other markets, where it provides end-to-end services across development, engineering, construction and operations for BESS infrastructure.

Execution of subsequent project stages will depend on regulatory procedures, market developments and grid connection approvals over the coming years.
