Indian renewable energy solutions provider Suzlon Group has secured an order from ArcelorMittal for 248.85MW of wind energy through its renewable energy entity in the country.

The order forms part of a 550MW hybrid project in the Indian state of Gujarat, where the wind energy generated will be supplied for captive use at ArcelorMittal Nippon steel facilities in the country.

The company will supply 79 S144 wind turbine generators with a rated capacity of 3.15MW.

Suzlon maintains a presence in Gujarat with a 4.5GW installed capacity base. The new agreement is its fourth wind order focused on decarbonising steel production in India.

With this deal, the company’s contribution to green steel capacity reaches approximately 1.16GW in the country.

Over the past year, Suzlon has collaborated with several steel producers to support the transition towards low-carbon steel production.

Suzlon vice-chairman Girish Tanti said: “We are proud to partner with ArcelorMittal, one of the world's most respected steel producers. Steel is the backbone of India's infrastructure, yet it remains one of the most energy-intensive industries.

“As the sector accelerates its journey toward decarbonisation, renewable energy has become a competitive and viable contributor. At Suzlon, we are committed to making this transition a reality through strong partnerships and industry coalitions like the Indian Steel Green Council.”

Suzlon has more than 21GW of wind energy installed across 17 countries. The company runs research and development centres across the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and India. Its portfolio includes the 2.xMW and 3.xMW series of wind turbines.

Suzlon CEO JP Chalasani said: “This project reflects Suzlon's strategic focus on the EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] segment, where we aim to gradually increase its share to 50% of our overall order book.”

In September 2024, Suzlon secured a 1.17GW wind energy order from NTPC Green Energy in India.
