Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of the Tata Power Company, has signed a battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA) with India’s National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

With this agreement, TPREL secured its inaugural battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Indian state of Kerala.

The project, awarded through a competitive bidding process under NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I tender, involves the establishment of a 30MW/120 megawatt hours (MWh) BESS for the Kerala State Electricity Board, the end user of the asset.

This battery energy system will be installed at the 220kV substation located in Kerala.

The project will be instrumental in managing peak power demand, improving grid flexibility and facilitating the smooth integration of renewable energy sources in Kerala.

This project is part of NHPC's larger scheme to establish 125MW/500MWh of standalone battery storage capacity within the state under a tariff-based competitive bidding framework backed by Viability Gap Funding.

It supports India’s ambitious goal of 500GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Following the Union Ministry of Power guidelines, the operation period of the project under BESPA spans 12 years, with commissioning expected by October 2026.

In addition to this new venture with NHPC, TPREL operates another solar and BESS initiative in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, India. It consists of a 100MW solar photovoltaic plant integrated with a 120MWh utility-scale storage facility developed through an engineering, procurement and construction contract from the Solar Energy Corporation of India.

With the latest project alongside existing operations comprising both solar and wind projects, TPREL’s total renewable capacity is now 10.9GW: 4.6GW of solar, 1GW of wind operational projects and 5.3GW under various stages of development.

In April 2025, Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy announced a partnership to develop a 131MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project.

This initiative is expected to produce around 300 million units of clean electricity each year, supporting Tata Motors in its goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
