Vattenfall has secured contracts to build the Hesselø and North Sea I Mid offshore wind projects through Denmark's latest tender, further expanding its offshore wind portfolio.

The Hesselø project will be situated in the Kattegat Sea, approximately 30km from the Danish coast, with a minimum installed capacity of approximately 800MW.

The North Sea I Mid project, located around 20km from the shoreline near Hvide Sande in the North Sea, will offer at least 1GW of capacity.

Each project will have grid connections reserved, with the grid link point positioned roughly 50km inland.

They will receive initial development consent for 30 years, with the option to extend it by an additional ten years.

Vattenfall business unit offshore head David Flood said: “Winning both projects reflects our continued ambition to grow our offshore wind portfolio and support the electrification of industry and society.

“Wind power, together with other fossil-free sources of generation, can help meet the growing demand for clean electricity in Europe.

“Projects like this demonstrate how we are scaling offshore wind while maintaining a strong focus on affordability and long-term value.”

Vattenfall’s offshore wind capacity in Denmark currently stands at around 1.5GW.

The company operates five offshore wind farms in the country, producing approximately 6.5TW-hours of electricity each year, enough to power 1.5 million households.

Both new projects will incorporate environmental and social measures during development.

The company stated that it intends to work closely with partners and authorities throughout the next stages of project development.

In May this year, Vattenfall inaugurated the 139MW Bruzaholm wind farm near Eksjö municipality in Sweden, which is expected to generate 460GW-hours of electricity annually.
