The State Government of Victoria has approved the development of the 400MW Mt Fyans wind farm, to be situated near Mortlake.

The project will feature 81 wind turbines and provide clean energy to 250,000 households in the area.

It will create more than 100 jobs during its construction phase and ten fulltime positions once it begins operations.

Victoria Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny stated: "We're making good decisions faster that will still protect the local environment, while providing Victorian households with cheaper energy.”

The project was reviewed by a planning panel, which involved consultations with local residents, community organisations and government bodies.

The panel has recommended that the project move forward, with provisions to safeguard local wildlife, such as bats and brolgas.

The wind farm is located within the South-West Renewable Energy Zone, one of six designated areas in Victoria identified for new renewable energy projects as outlined in the Victorian Transmission Plan.

Victoria has consistently met its renewable energy targets and is progressing towards its next objectives of achieving 65% renewable energy generation by 2030 and 95% by 2035.

The expansion of renewable energy sources is expected to provide an affordable energy supply for various sectors across the state, with an estimated requirement of 67,000 jobs to support the energy transition by 2040.

In the first half of 2025, wind energy contributed 21% to Victoria's monthly electricity generation.

Victoria Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio stated: “The Mt Fyans wind farm will not only provide cheaper and reliable energy for hundreds of thousands of Victorians – it’ll also provide a major boost to the economy of South-West Victoria.”
