Nuclear power supplier Westinghouse Electric Company has become a founding member of the Texas Nuclear Alliance (TNA).

The company is renowned for its comprehensive range of advanced nuclear technologies that span the nuclear lifecycle, including reactor designs, fuel products and operational services for power plants.

The AP1000 reactor by Westinghouse is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems.

The construction-ready reactor has modular design features and claims to have the smallest footprint per megawatt electric on the market.

TNA president Reed Clay stated: “Westinghouse has unmatched nuclear expertise, providing the technology that is used to run nearly half of the world’s operating nuclear plants, including the four commercially operating reactors at South Texas Project and Comanche Peak here in Texas.

“TNA is proud to partner with Westinghouse to ensure safe and reliable nuclear energy continues to power future generations here in Texas.”

Six AP1000 reactors are achieving record levels of operational performance and availability around the globe, with 12 more under construction and another six contracted.

Building upon this proven technology is Westinghouse's AP300 small modular reactor (SMR), which positions itself as one of the world's most revolutionary SMR solutions ready for deployment.

In contrast to others being developed with novel technologies, the AP300 SMR leverages the engineering, components and supply chain of the AP1000, significantly mitigating deployment risks.

The eVinci microreactor uses decades of pioneering advancements from Westinghouse to deliver reliable, secure and scalable energy solutions wherever required.

With minimal moving components, it operates similarly to a battery, offering flexibility for power systems that range from a few kilowatts up to 5MW.

This innovative reactor is capable of providing continuous electricity around the clock for more than eight years without the need for refuelling.

Westinghouse interim CEO Dan Sumner stated: “TNA is providing bold leadership to bring the benefits of reliable, abundant and clean nuclear energy to Texans.

“As a company that has been a part of the Texas nuclear ecosystem for decades, Westinghouse stands ready to help the state explore new opportunities – whether it is proven grid-scale technologies like our AP1000 reactor, our AP300 SMR or flexible next-generation innovations like our eVinci microreactor.”

In July 2025, Energoatom and Westinghouse partnered to enhance Ukraine’s energy security. The agreement outlined the intention to add an assembly line for VVER-1000 fuel elements at Energoatom’s subsidiary, AtomEnergoMash.
