Zelestra, EDP sign solar-battery PPA in Spain

Under the long-term agreement, Zelestra aims to develop a 160MWh BESS in Cáceres.

Renewable energy company Zelestra and EDP have entered into the first power purchase agreement (PPA) in Spain to hybridise an existing solar plant with battery storage.

Under the long-term agreement, Zelestra plans to develop a 160 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Cáceres to support the 50MW Pizarroso solar plant, which has been operating since 2023.

EDP, the solar plant’s current offtaker, plans to use battery storage to improve energy management and increase system flexibility.

This agreement enhances the strategic partnership between the two companies in Spain.

In 2025, Zelestra and EDP signed the country’s first PPA combining solar and BESS, covering 170MW of solar capacity and 400MWh of storage in Trujillo, Extremadura.

Last month, Zelestra launched three solar plants in Cuenca, Spain, earlier than planned, with a total capacity of 162MW.

These projects, Belinchón I, II, and III, are located in the Castilla-La Mancha region.

Built in under 14 months by Zelestra’s engineering, procurement and construction team, the facilities created around 400 jobs.

In February, the company began construction of the Babilonia solar facility, a 242MW-direct current (MWdc) project in Arequipa, Peru.

The project forms part of the wider La Joya solar complex, which is expected to reach nearly 700MWdc of total capacity.

The construction of the Babilonia facility is supported by a long-term PPA with Celepsa, a company under Grupo UNACEM in Peru’s electricity sector.

In November 2025, Zelestra entered into a long-term PPA with Microsoft for solar projects in Spain, collectively offering a capacity of 95.7MW-alternating current.

Under this contract, Microsoft will purchase the clean energy generated by Zelestra's Escatrón II and Fuendetodos II solar projects, which are currently under construction in Zaragoza, Aragón.
