French energy giant EDF has concluded the construction of the second reactor base at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in the UK on schedule, despite restrictions to contain coronavirus. Completion of the 49,000-tonne reactor base means work can now begin on the construction of permanent reactor buildings above ground level.

SIMEC Energy has commenced construction work on its new hydropower project at Blackwater Dam, near Kinlochleven in Scotland. The company said in a statement that work on the hydro project will be carried out in compliance with recently revised government regulations, which allow building and construction work to restart with social distancing measures in place.

The Norwegian government has proposed a $372m (NOK3.6bn) investment in a green restructuring programme to mitigate the impact of Covid-19. The proposal includes the allocation of ($210m) NOK2bn to innovation fund Enova, which would fund green technology development. The fund supports companies within the supplier, maritime, renewable energy, battery technology, offshore wind, and green shipping industries. It has designated $1.55m (NOK15m) for a new energy research centre focused on the challenges of offshore wind.

China is expected to add 85.1GW of renewable energy capacity to its grid this year despite the initial economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Of the 85.1GW, it will add 35.1 GW of wind capacity and 48.45GW of solar capacity, the National New Energy Consumption Monitoring and Early Warning Center has announced.
