EDF Energy is expected to submit a planning application for the Sizewell C nuclear plant in the UK despite delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. EDF UK in a statement said: “We anticipate submitting the planning application for Sizewell C soon following a pause due to the coronavirus. We will confirm as soon as the planning application is submitted. It is important to note that public engagement in the process will not begin until the planning inspectorate accepts the application which takes around a month.”

Canada’s BC Hydro has ordered Innergex Renewable Energy to suspend producing electricity in the wake of the plunge in demand following the coronavirus outbreak. The power producer has been told by BC Hydro that it will not accept or pay for the electricity that it generates at six of its 21 run-of-river power generating plants in British Columbia from 22 May to 20 July.

Completion of Brazil’s third nuclear reactor may get delayed from November 2026 to 2027 in the wake of the dip in electricity demand and weakening of currency following the Covid-19 outbreak. Eletronuclear president Leonam Guimaraes told Reuters that the nuclear power company still expects to finalise a partner by 2023 to help complete and operate the 1,400MW Angra 3 nuclear reactor. Companies from China, Russia, France, and South Korea could be possible partners.

Renewable energy firm RES is leveraging technology from popular online multiplayer games such as Fortnite and Counter-Strike to keep turbines spinning following the outbreak of the coronavirus. The company, which works on behalf of over 100 wind farms and 19 solar parks in the UK, said gaming technology creates a virtual room and offers its operational controllers the ability to communicate with each other verbally or through instant messaging.
