Indian state-owned power company NTPC has resumed construction work on the super thermal power project in the state of Telangana amidst the ongoing nationwide lockdown. Works on the 1,600MW Telangana Super thermal power project Phase-I was halted on 25 March 2020. The works will be carried out in a staggered manner in two-shifts to limit the number of people and ensure adherence to social distancing norms at work sites.

The countrywide lockdown has pulled down power consumption in India by 22.75% to 85.05 billion units (BU) in the month of April as against 110.11 BU compared to last year. According to the power ministry data, the peak power demand met in April was 132.77GW, nearly one-fourth less than 176.81GW than in 2019.

In the March-April period, demand for commercial photovoltaic (PV) panels in Indonesia has plummeted by approximately 70% from a year earlier in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The demand suffered a massive setback as the country’s government slashed electrification projects and businesses aborted installation plans, according to a survey conducted by energy think tank Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR).

Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de España (REE) has said that the demand for electricity in April dipped by 17.3% year-on-year to an estimated 17,104GWh mainly due to the lockdown to combat Covid-19. The fall in demand was witnessed across Spain’s entire national territory. The demand plummeted by 17% to 16,191GWh on the mainland, while it fell by 27.6% and 20.3%, respectively in the Balearic and the Canary Islands.
