South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has issued force-majeure notice to its coal suppliers as nationwide lockdown after the Covid-19 outbreak has diminished demand for electricity. Eskom spokesman Sikonathi Mantshantsha said: “We have put some of our generation units out of service during this period of the lockdown because of the drop in demand. We anticipate that the demand will pick up soon after the lockdown has been lifted.”

Photovoltaic power plants in Germany produced a record amount of electricity this week as the coronavirus lockdown drastically reduced air pollution in Europe. Solar plants generated 32,227MW of electricity on Monday, surpassing the previous best on 23 March. DWD federal weather service spokesman Andreas Friedrich told Bloomberg: “There is hardly a cloud over Germany. And a high-pressure system over Scandinavia will keep these conditions in place until at least Friday.”

Bloom Energy has commenced rapid deployment of microgrids to support anticipated Covid-19 patient overflow in California. The microgrid will replace diesel generators at two sites. The fuel cell projects will drastically reduce smog-forming pollution and particulate matter enabling patients with respiratory issues to breathe clean air.

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) of Nigeria has deployed several solar hybrid systems at four Covid-19 care facilities in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The company has already concluded the deployment of solar hybrid mini-grid plants in the Abuja and Lagos centres. The two other projects in Ogun state were scheduled to be handed over to authorities on 16 April. These facilities have been built in just two weeks.
