The nuclear agency of Kenya has submitted impact studies for a $5bn nuclear power plant. It hopes to commence operations at the plant before 2027. An agency spokesperson said the country is looking to expand have 1GW of nuclear capacity operational by 2035. The agency considers a site in Tana River County, near Kenya’s coast, as the preferred location for its first plant.

Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, China added 11.52GW of solar capacity during the first half of 2020, compared with 11.4GW in the first half of 2019.  Data released by the National Energy Administration says that large-scale solar installations accounted for 7.08GW, while distributed solar accounted for 4.43GW. At the end of June this year, the cumulative solar capacity of China reached 216GW.

Canadian Solar has started construction on its 10MW Groß Siemz solar power plant in Germany. Located across an 11-hectare area near the city of Schönberg, the project will use more than 22,900 pieces of high-efficiency mono-PERC modules. GS Solar, the customer and project owner, will connect the plant to the grid in October this year.

Thai energy company Banpu has reached an agreement to acquire the 37.6MW El Wind Mui Dinh onshore wind farm in southern Vietnam, in a deal valued at $66m. The investment was made through BRE Singapore, an associate company in which Banpu owns a 50% stake through Banpu Next Co.
