Consumption of electricity in the US will dip 3.4% this year due to disruption caused by the Covid-19 lockdowns. The US Energy Information Administration expects retail power sales to fall to 3,623 TWh in 2020, down from 3,750 TWh in 2019. However, it then expects consumption will rise to 3,655 billion kWh in 2021.
Offshore wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas has announced plans to cut another 148 employees due to a pause in production capacity growth. This latest round of job cuts comes after the company laid off 25 people in January. The new cuts will begin from next month, mainly affecting staff at the company’s facilities in Nakskov, Lindø, and Esbjerg.
Spanish utility Iberdrola has won three contracts for the construction of wind farms in Greece with a combined capacity of 98.4MW. The company plans to commission the wind turbines by 2022, increasing Iberdrola’s capacity in Greece to 415 MW.
Pegasus Group, on behalf of JBM Solar Projects, has received planning permission for a 50MW solar and battery project near Swindon in the UK. Pegasus Group planning director Simon Chamberlayne said: “It is estimated that there will be up to 80 construction workers on-site during peak times of the construction period, which is expected to be around 6 months, as well as an additional 106 temporary jobs in the wider economy during the 6-month build phase.”
