A concrete-producing plant in Avonmouth has reported an outbreak of Covid-19 among its workers, with 28 positive tests among its workforce causing owner Balfour Beatty to suspend operations.
The facility reported 22 positive cases on Monday, and a further six today, a greater figure than the entire city of Bristol reported in the last week. As the facility is based in the Bristol suburb of Avonmouth, it is unclear if these figures will count towards Bristol’s total number of positive tests.

The plant rose to prominence having been contracted to supply the concrete to Hinkley Point C, the much-publicised nuclear power plant in Somerset. Due to be completed in 2025, the facility aims to offset nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and will require three million tonnes of concrete over the course of its construction, a vast demand that the Avonmouth facility aims to meet, with a maximum production capacity of 36 cubic metres of concrete per hour
