Global: The global coronavirus death toll is 1,014,291 according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Covid-19 infections are nearing 34 million world wide.
US: Coronavirus cases in the US increased 0.6% as compared with the same time Tuesday to 7.23 million, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg News. Deaths rose to 206,959.
India: India reported another 86,821 coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total confirmed number to 6.31 million, government data showed. Covid-19 related deaths rose to 98,678.
Coronavirus super-spreaders were behind the explosion of Covid-19 in India, researchers said. One in 15 Indians have been exposed.
UK: The UK on Wednesday recorded more than 7,000 cases of Covid-19 for the second day running: the two highest daily tallies since the start of the pandemic.

By GlobalDataResearch conducted by Imperial College London using the results from England’s largest community coronavirus testing programme suggests that the rate of infection has decreased in the country, but that the number of infections has increased “substantially”.
Australia: In Australia, the state of Victoria has recorded 15 new cases of coronavirus and two more fatalities, bringing the state’s death toll to 800 and the national figure to 888.
Germany: Germany’s daily coronavirus cases rose the most since late April, while the infection rate fell below a key benchmark of 1.0 for the first time in five days. There were 2,442 new cases in the 24 hours through Thursday morning, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Vaccine news
Europe: European regulators are set to start an accelerated review of a Covid-19 vaccine front-runner from the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca Plc. Trials were halted earlier this month due to concerns about a trial participant who fell ill. However Reuters also reported that the US Food and Drug Administration had widened its investigation of the incident that led to the trial halt. US authorities have yet to approve the restart of the trial there.
Lockdown updates
India: The federal government issued guidelines allowing movie theatres to reopen at 50% capacity and said states could decide to gradually open schools, colleges and other educational institutions from 15 October.
Germany: Germany declared regions in 11 European countries to be areas where there was an elevated risk of exposure to the novel coronavirus.
Cuba: Cuba said on Wednesday it was lifting a curfew and partial lockdown in Havana. The governor of Havana Reinaldo García Zapata said cases had dropped to an average of 21 per day over the last week for an infection rate of 0.87 in justifying the decision.
UK: Stormont’s health minister is to recommend the introduction of further coronavirus restrictions in Northern Ireland, as it recorded its highest number of infections in a 24-hour period – 424 – since the region’s testing regime was expanded, PA Media reports.
South Africa: South Africa will reopen its borders to all African countries from today while barring tourists from around 50 nations with high infection rates, including Britain, France, India, Russia and the US.
Colombia: Colombia’s land and water borders will remain closed until 1 November, the country’s migration agency said on Wednesday, in an effort to stem coronavirus infections.
Spain: Residents of infection hotspot Madrid are to be barred from leaving except on essential trips under new rules to fight the coronavirus resurgence, Spain’s government said on Wednesday Reuters reports.
Czech Republic: From Monday, 5 October a state of emergency will apply in the Czech Republic. The government of Andrej Babiš announced at an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, 30 September.
Bulgaria: The Minister of Health ordered that from 1 October, indoor sports competitions may be held with an audience with an occupancy of no more than 50% of the capacity of the sports facility. Spectators will be accommodated in at least one seat and at a physical distance of 1.5 meters.
Economic updates
Saudi Arabia: Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Saudi Arabia contracted by 7.0% in real terms in the second quarter of 2020.
Latin America: The UN’s International Labour Organization said Wednesday that at least 34 million jobs have been lost in Latin America due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Japan: Japan’s ruling party will consider additional economic stimulus to prop up the economy amid the pandemic, and will compile another budget if needed, Toshihiro Nikai, the secretary general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party told the Nikkei in an interview.
US: American Airlines Group Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc. will start laying off thousands of employees, spurning an appeal from US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The cuts are the latest among tens of thousands of job losses announced by blue-chip companies in a 24-hour period.
