ABB Transformer factory

Swiss power and automation technology company ABB has inaugurated two new facilities in Savli, close to its Vadodara facility in Gujarat, India to manufacture high-voltage switchgear and distribution transformers.

Built with an investment of around $50m, the two facilities, which were spread across an area of 15,000m2, are the high-voltage unit and the new transformer factory.

The high-voltage unit will manufacture gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and plug and switch system (PASS) hybrid switchgear solutions.

The GIS’ features, such as extremely low space requirements and high reliability, provide feasible solutions for complex switchgear applications and its compact and modular design enable reductions in product volume, footprint and weight, while improving eco-efficiency, ABB claims.

ABB also claims its high-voltage GIS product portfolio now includes voltage levels ranging between 72.5kV – 1,100kV.

The PASS solution integrates features of both air- and gas-insulated technologies, combining the functions of a complete switchgear bay in a single module and pre-assembled modules enable quicker installation.

The new transformer factory will produce dry-type and oil immersed distribution transformers that will enhance the company’s offering in India and extend the distribution transformer range up to 10MVA, 36kV.

Dry-type transformer, which is suitable for indoor applications, helps reduce environmental impact and enhance safety, while an oil-immersed transformer, which is designed for outdoor mounting, is a three phase pad-mounted transformer that provides electrical service on underground distribution systems.

ABB Power Products division head Bernhard Jucker said the opening of two facilities supports the company’s ‘in country for country’ approach and is in line with its strategy to set up factories and marketing units near to customers.

“By expanding our footprint in India, we can provide customers with an extended offering and deliver solutions suited to local needs, faster and more efficiently,” said Jucker.
