Vestas Wind Systems has won a contract from SC Crucea Wind Farm, 100% owned indirectly by STEAG, for the 108MW Crucea North wind power plant in Romania.

The contract calls for the supply, installation and commissioning of the 36 V112-3.0 MW turbines, along with a VestasOnline Business SCADA solution as well as a ten-year AOM 4000 full-scope service agreement with delivery of turbines set to begin in April 2014.

Located in the Constanta County in the province of Dobrogea, the project, which is one of the country’s largest wind power plants, will include the construction of turbines, a 33/110kV substation, a 400/110kV transformer station Stupina 2 with a 250MVA transformer and associated transmission infrastructure.

The transmission infrastructure will include construction and operation of around 43km of 33kV underground medium-voltage electrical connection lines to connect turbines to the substation; and around 8.8km of 110kV underground high-voltage transmission lines from substation to the transformer station.

The project will also see the construction of around 150m of 400kV underground high-voltage transmission lines connecting the transformer station to the power distribution grid owned by Transelectrica through the existing 110/400kV Stupina transformer station.

“The project plans to sell both electricity and associated green certificates (GC) on the OPCOM day-ahead and the GC market respectively.”

Once commissioned by December 2014, the project is likely to generate more than 300GWh a year, which is enough o power more than 550,000 persons in Romania, and curb around 124,000t of CO2 emissions.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be around €192m, of which €68 is likely to be provided by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, while other financial institutions and STEAG will provide the remaining funds.

Once operational, the project plans to sell both electricity and associated green certificates (GC) on the OPCOM day-ahead and the GC market respectively.

Vestas Central Europe president Thomas Richterich said that the company has received a contract from Crucea Wind Farm for the Crucea North project, which marks another important milestone in further developing the Romanian wind market.

“With this order Vestas reinforces its market leading position in the Romanian market having the strongest local presence and the largest operational fleet,” said Richterich.
