Spanish engineering firm Siemens Gamesa has announced a “social campaign” to aid in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighted a pledge to donate €1m worth of emergency materials, such as personal protective equipment.
The company, which has installed around 98GW of onshore and offshore wind power since the 1980s, will donate the equipment to hospitals and communities where it operates, including Madrid and Bilbao in Spain and the US states of Florida, Iowa and Kansas. The relief will be distributed through the firm’s existing supply and distribution networks, and will be the first wave in what its executives hope will be a sustained response to the pandemic, which will yield long-term benefits.

“Coronavirus is both huge in its global reach but also very personal in its impact, touching us all,” said CEO Markus Tacke. “I am proud that our staff are taking the initiative to lead our global response to this crisis and pleased that we will be able to play a role in the communities in which we have close links.”
Siemens Gamesa also announced a number of staff-led projects to deal with the crisis, including employee donations to a Covid-19 fund established by the International Federation of the Red Cross. The fund, which is operated alongside the Common Humanitarian Fund, a UN initiative to secure financial support for relief for international humanitarian crises, has already raised over $6m to aid in relief efforts.
