Japan’s Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has concluded construction of a new coal gasification furnace plant at its site in Nagasaki.
The new facility has been developed to provide core solutions for plants featuring integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC), a next-generation technology in the field of high-efficiency coal-fired power generation. It will also enable MHPS to create a fully integrated production system for IGCC.

The facility has already started producing furnaces, including one to be used in a 540MW IGCC plant in Fukushima, Japan.
Coal gasification furnaces offer a high-temperature, high-pressure environment required for efficient gasification of coal. They employ gasification equipment that can withstand high temperatures and a pressure container, which is capable of increasing pressure levels. MHPS has adopted a production system, which can produce furnaces able to accommodate these conditions.
The system uses both conventional underlying technologies such as welding and newly developed proprietary technologies, including automated welding machines and ICT systems.
To reduce construction time, furnaces produced at the company’s new plant will be modularised and transported to the construction site for installation.
