Power plant equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) has commissioned a 82.5MW hydro electricity generating unit at the 330MW Shrinagar Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Uttarakhand, India.

The renewable facility, which is being developed by Alaknanda Hydro Power Corporation (GVK Group), will house three more units with power generation capacity of 82.5MW each.

The power plant is being constructed on the Alaknanda River, near the town of Shrinagar in Pauri Garhwal District in the Indian state.

It facility will be supported by a dam, which has a height of 90m from deepest foundation level.

Bhel will be responsible for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning of the four units at the facility which including Francis turbines, generators, static excitation system, generator transformer, unit transformers and station transformers.

The scope of work for the Indian firm will also include supply of main inlet valve, digital governors, control and monitoring system (SCADA), busduct, associated station auxiliaries, 400kV switchyard and electrical and mechanical balance of plant (BOP).

GVK has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the project with the state of Uttar Pradesh. Up to 12% of the generated power from the facility will be transmitted to Uttarakhand without any charge.

In addtion the firm is also associated with other hydro projects in the state, including Lata Tapovan (3x57MW), Tapovan Vishnugarh (4x130MW), Vyasi (2X60MW) and Vishnugarh Pipalkoti (4x111MW).
