Called Generic Design Assessment (GDA), the evaluation will see regulators reviewing the safety, security, and environmental aspects of the reactor design before site-specific proposals are brought forward.

Once completed, the review will allow Bradwell Power Generation Company to build a new nuclear power station at its site situated at Bradwell in Essex, UK.

“Phase I of the GDA began in January this year and concluded in November.”

The ongoing GDA is expected to take 12 months to complete.

The Environment Agency’s nuclear regulation group manager Steve Hardy said: “In this GDA, we’re assessing the environmental acceptability of a new reactor design from China, the UK HPR1000.

“We’ll identify any issues or concerns we have with the UK HPR1000 and work with GNS, China General Nuclear (CGN)/EDF’s company bringing this reactor to the UK, to make sure it understands our expectations and delivers a design that meets them.

“We are beginning a process of robust scrutiny on which we will report our progress and findings. People can contribute to this work through the comments process that can be accessed from our websites.”

Phase I of the GDA began in January this year and concluded in November after the UK regulators found that the information submitted by GNS was sufficient to take the assessment to the next level.
