Neoen has officially inaugurated its 412MW Goyder South wind farm located in South Australia.

Situated on the lands of the Ngadjuri Nation, near Burra in South Australia’s Mid North region, the wind farm stands as the largest in both the state and Neoen’s portfolio.

This wind farm, featuring 75 wind turbines, is projected to produce around 1.5TWh of renewable energy each year.

This initiative is expected to boost wind power production in the state’s electricity market by over 20%, contributing to South Australia’s goal of reaching 100% net renewable energy by 2027.

The Goyder South wind farm has been built in two phases and is now operational, supplying energy to customers through three long-term power purchase agreements.

The company holds a 100MW 14-year contract with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government, aiding its mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

Additionally, it has secured a ten-year deal for 40MW with Flow Power, an Australian electricity retailer.

Goyder South is pioneering a 70MW renewable energy baseload agreement with BHP.

In collaboration with Neoen’s Blyth Battery and leveraging advanced energy management expertise, Goyder South provides power to the resources company for operating its Olympic Dam mine in the state.

South Australian Minister for Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis said: “I commend Neoen on this significant investment and seamless development of what is now the biggest wind farm in South Australia. We are well on track for South Australia to meet its goal of 100% net renewables generation by 2027, and projects such as this are at the vanguard of that ambition.

“Projects like Neoen’s Goyder South Wind Farm highlight the quality of the wind resource here in South Australia, and when combined with abundant solar, it becomes clear why renewable energy companies from around the world are lining up to invest in South Australia.”

The Goyder South wind farm has generated over 400 construction jobs and 12 permanent, long-term roles contributing more than A$100m to the local supply chain.

With the upcoming construction of the Goyder North wind farm and Goyder Battery, Neoen’s contribution to South Australia’s energy transition is set to exceed 1.5GW of renewable energy and storage capacity.

These assets, along with Goyder South, form part of the Goyder Renewables Zone, a hybrid renewable energy hub in the state’s Mid North region.

Neoen Australia CEO Jean-Christophe Cheylus said: “Goyder South is a credit to the world-class wind resources of South Australia and to the team’s leadership in leveraging these to develop high-quality projects.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped bring this wind farm to life – our host landowners, the governments of South Australia and the ACT, and the Regional Council of Goyder, as well as ElectraNet, AEMO [Australian Energy Market Operator], BHP and Flow Power. We hope to continue our longstanding partnership for years to come!”

This June, Neoen inaugurated Portugal’s largest solar park in Azambuja, 70km north of Lisbon.
