RWE has announced that the construction of Denmark’s 1.1GW Thor offshore wind farm project has reached a key stage, with 36 of 72 turbines now installed off the west coast near Jutland.

Each of the Siemens Gamesa turbines has a capacity of up to 15MW, stands approximately 148m above sea level and is equipped with 115m-long rotor blades.

The installation process is being conducted from the Port of Esbjerg using the Brave Tern vessel operated by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier.

RWE expects to complete the installation of the remaining 36 turbines by the end of 2026 and that all testing and commissioning activities will finish by spring 2027.

Upon reaching full operation, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the equivalent demand of more than one million Danish households.

The Thor offshore wind farm began delivering electricity to the Danish grid in March 2026.

RWE Offshore Wind chief technology officer Tobias Keitel said: “With every turbine we install, we move closer to delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.

“This halfway milestone is the perfect opportunity for me to express my thanks to our project team and supply chain partners. Their commitment and dedication have kept Thor firmly on track, even in challenging situations.

“Our focus now is on completing the construction work and bringing Thor into full commercial operation by 2027.”

The Thor project includes a number of sustainability-focused features. It is said to be the first offshore wind farm in the world to deploy 36 turbine towers constructed from carbon (CO₂)-reduced steel, supplied by Siemens Gamesa.

Additionally, 40 of the turbines will together incorporate 120 recyclable rotor blades, representing a move towards greater life cycle sustainability.

Thor is a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51% stake and is responsible for building and operating the wind farm, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49%.

The companies have stated that the project is on schedule, with installation, testing and commissioning proceeding as planned.
