Swedish power company Vattenfall has made a final investment decision (FID) to construct a battery storage facility in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany, with an installed capacity of 254MW and a storage capacity of approximately 1GW-hour.

The battery storage facility is set to be developed at the location of the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power station, where decommissioning activities are ongoing.

According to Vattenfall, it will be the largest battery storage project so far and among the largest storage facilities planned in Germany.

The facility will connect to the 50-hertz (Hz), 380kV transmission grid and is set to be operational by the end of 2028.

Vattenfall solar and batteries head Claus Wattendrup said: “This is excellent news for Brunsbüttel as an energy hub, and we are excited to move forward with this project.

“Batteries play a key role in the future energy system, balancing electricity demand and supply.

“As generation from solar and wind power continues to grow, powerful storage solutions are essential for strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.”

The Brunsbüttel project will nearly double Vattenfall’s existing battery storage capacity.

The company currently operates 150MW of battery capacity and has another 120MW under construction, mostly at sites connected to wind and solar projects.

In addition to expanding its own battery assets, Vattenfall is developing its flexibility optimisation business, managing and marketing battery capacity for other asset owners.

The company aims to optimise up to 1.5GW of battery assets by 2029. Vattenfall says its mix of battery projects and optimisation services will help accelerate integration of renewable power into the grid.

Last month, the company secured contracts to build the Hesselø and North Sea I Mid offshore wind projects through Denmark’s latest tender.
