Swiss technology firm ABB has secured a contract to supply its compact gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PLN.

ABB will design, supply, and commission 150kV GIS for ten substations in Greater Jakarta, Western Java, East Java and Sulawesi.

In addition to enabling reliable power supply, GIS can be operated in confined spaces and harsh environments, control the network and protect it from power outages.

Compared with regular air-insulated switchgear, GIS also offers a compact footprint, and a space reduction of up to 90%. As a result, substations can be constructed within urban areas where land is scarce and expensive.

The Indonesian Government intends to connect all households in the country to the national electricity grid by 2025. It is implementing a new programme to add 35,000MW of power.

ABB Power Grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “We are pleased to continue supporting the Indonesian Government and PLN in their efforts to strengthen the grid and deliver reliable power to meet the country’s growing electricity needs.
