The Republic of Zambia government initiated the construction of the 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower (KGL) hydroelectric power station on the Kafue River in the southern Chikankata district, 90km away from the Lusaka, the capital and largest city of Zambia, in November 2015.
McNally Bharat Engineering (MBE) is one of the leading engineering companies in India with a group turnover of $435m. MBE started operations in 1961 as the Indian arm of McNally Pittsburg, US in the Kumardhubi, Dhanbad district, manufacturing material handling equipment for the coal and mining industry.

MBE also has a strong presence in manufacturing through its subsidiary arm, McNally Sayaji Engineering (MSEL). MBE acquired Sayaji Iron and Engineering Company, Baroda, a reputed manufacturer of crushers and screen in 2008. MSEL has four factories in India at Kumardhubi, Asansol, Bangalore and Baroda. The manufacturing units have ISO 9000 certification.
In 2009, MBE took over the 155-year-old coal and minerals technology (CMT) division of KHD Humboldt Wedag, Germany.
MBE also has another subsidiary, EWB Kornyezetvedelmi, Hungary, a fully owned company of MBE, who are leaders in pneumatic conveying and ash-handling systems.
EPC power plant packages
MBE is emerging as a leading EPC company in balance of plant packages. MBE has all of the in–house facilities needed for timely execution of large and complex projects such as complete balance of plant within the shortest possible time.
MBE has excellent engineering and execution capabilities in various areas of thermal power station (210MW and above capacity) balance of plant activities such as coal-handling plants, ash-handling systems, water management systems, piping, fire fighting and protection systems, electrical and automation (including substation, switchyard, LT and HT switchgear and instrumentation) as well as complete civil and structural work.
MBE uses excellent technology to manufacture ash, coal and water systems. The company also has strategic alliances with leading organisations that excel in various important systems in thermal power stations such as cooling towers, fuel oil loading and unloading systems.
Bulk-material handling systems
It is the pioneer of bulk-material handling systems in India and has executed over 100 projects ranging from 500t/hr to 20,000t/hr. Over the past five decades MBE has had several firsts to its credit in India such as the first cross country coal conveying system in OSEB, Talcher and the first indigenously built 5,500t/hr rapid loading system with Silo at Jayant coal-handling plant. It also supplies a wide range of equipment such as wagon tipplers with side arm chargers, track hoppers with paddle feeders, conveyors, crushers, screens, mills, feeders, stackers. In addition, MBE provides reclaimers, traveling trippers and wagon loading and unloading systems. In other words, MBE is a one-stop shop for material-handling projects and equipment in India.
MBE built the first ash-handling plant for Indian Explosive, Kanpur. It acquired state-of-the-art technology from EWB Hungary, a world leader in the field for all types of ash and powdered material-handling systems. EWB is now a 100% subsidiary of MBE.
MBE can supply:
- Bottom ash-handling by mechanical scraper chain conveyors, hydro sluicing with jet pump and water re-circulation. MBE can also offer complete dry bottom ash-handling by means of mechanical chain conveyors which eliminate use of any water for the system
- Bed ash-handling by pneumatic pressure / vacuum conveying systems and hydraulic systems
- Fly ash-handling by mechanical conveyors, pneumatic pressure / vacuum conveying systems and hydraulic systems
- Air slide systems
- Silo loading and unloading including silo design

MBE has expertise in the field of pneumatic dense phase conveying systems of ash in a low power and eco-friendly manner and has supplied a number of plants in Europe and South East Asia.
