Description

The project is currently owned by Volta River Authority.

The gross head and net head of the project are 68.88m and 65m respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 6 in number. The penstock length is 116m. The penstock diameter is 7.2m. Akosombo underwent through rehabilitation & modernization during 1989-1993,1999-2000,2001-2006.

Power purchase agreement

The power generated from the project is sold to Electricity Company of Ghana under a power purchase agreement for a period of 20 years. The contracted capacity is 100MW.

Contractors involved

Andritz Hydro was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 6 units of francis turbines, each with 173.1MW nameplate capacity.

General Electric supplied 6 electric generators for the project. The generator capacity is 179.95 MVA.
