The project is currently owned by Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad with a stake of 100%.
Arenal is a reservoir based project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 2,416 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 210m and 186m respectively. The penstock length is 641.38m. The penstock diameter is 2m. The project generated 637,000 MWh of electricity.

Fuji Electric was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 3 units of francis turbines, each with 52.466MW nameplate capacity.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries supplied 3 electric generators for the project. The generator capacity is 61.72 MVA.
