North America power industry tenders in Q1 2021: The US leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, the US led the activity in Q1 2021 with 523 tenders and a share of 78.2%, down 6.2% over the previous quarter and down 2% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Canada with 140 tenders and a share of 20.9% and Puerto Rico with six tenders and a share of 0.9% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, the US held the top spot with 536 tenders, followed by Canada with 104.

Thermal is top technology area for tenders in Q1 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 259 tenders and a 74% share, followed by solar with 60 tenders and a 17.1% share and wind with 13 tenders and a 3.7% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in North America power tenders activity during Q1 2021, with 277 tenders, followed by Generation Equipment (261) and Power Plant (51).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 469 tenders and a 70.1% share
  2. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 127 tenders and a 19% share
  3. Project Implementation: 51 tenders and a 7.6% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: ten tenders and a 1.5% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: seven tenders and a 1% share
  6. Others: five tenders and a 0.7% share.

Power tenders in Q1 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Entergy Services (United States): 700MW from two tenders
  2. Entergy Services, L and Northern States Power Company. (United States): 500MW from one tender
  3. Appalachian Power (United States): 300MW capacity from one tender.
