Adani Energy Solutions (AESL) has been awarded an inter-state transmission project in Andhra Pradesh, India, valued at approximately Rs85bn ($881m).

The company emerged as the successful bidder in a tariff-based competitive bidding process run by the Government of India.

The initiative aims to support planned green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the Vizag area, with the transmission system intended to meet estimated additional demand of 4.5GW.

The project, named the Transmission System for Proposed Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Projects in Vizag Area, Andhra Pradesh (Phase-I), will be managed through a special purpose vehicle, Vizag Power Transmission.

The scope of work includes establishing two gas-insulated switchgear substations: a 4×1.5GV-ampere (GVA), 765/400kV facility at Pendurthi (Visakhapatnam) and a 3×1.5GVA, 765/400kV facility at Khammam-II.

Once complete, AESL’s operational portfolio will increase by 1,582 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 10.5GVA of transformation capacity.

This project will also address the increased load anticipated from the Pendurthi-Vizag region, an area experiencing rapid investment in data centres and digital infrastructure.

Delivery of the project is scheduled within 30 months.

AESL CEO Kandarp Patel said: “The Vizag transmission project is an important step in building the energy backbone for India’s next generation of industrial growth.

“It will support the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia capacity in Andhra Pradesh, while also strengthening the grid for emerging digital infrastructure demand in the Pendurthi-Vizag region.

“As India advances towards a cleaner, more technology-driven economy, AESL remains committed to developing resilient, future-ready transmission networks that enable sustainable growth at scale.”

According to AESL, Vizag is developing into an emerging location for digital and industrial infrastructure, with new clean energy and data centre projects demanding reliable power supply and grid stability.

AESL’s overall transmission network will reach 29,531 circuit kilometres and 133.68GVA of transformation capacity.

In April this year, AESL, via its subsidiary Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure, initiated a 1GW high-voltage direct current transmission link in Mumbai, India.
