BlueFloat Energy and Energy Estate have unveiled plans to develop the first three offshore wind projects in Australia with a combined capacity of 4.3GW.

The partnership will combine BlueFloat’s experience in offshore wind segment and the strong local presence and development expertise of Energy Estate.

The companies will develop the 1.4GW Hunter Coast, the 1.6GW Wollongong and the 1.3GW Greater Gippsland offshore wind projects.

To be located off the coast south of Newcastle in New South Wales’ (NSW) Hunter Coast region, the Hunter Coast offshore facility will feature floating wind turbines.

The Wollongong offshore wind project will be developed across two sites off the coast from Wollongong in NSW’s Illawarra region.

BlueFloat and Energy Estate’s Greater Gippsland wind project will be developed off the coast of the Gippsland region of Victoria and use bottom-fixed wind turbines technology.

BlueFloat Energy CEO Carlos Martin said: “We are excited by the prospect of introducing the two types of offshore wind technology (floating and fixed) into Australia, as this will enable us to harness some of the best offshore wind resources globally.

“The combination of world-class wind resources, the transition from fossil fuels, and suitable maritime conditions is an ideal platform for large-scale energy infrastructure projects being built close to load sources.”

Additionally, the two companies are assessing new sites in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia and plan to announce further projects early next year.

Energy Estate engagement director Rosie King said: “BlueFloat Energy and Energy Estate’s shared set of values includes actively taking steps to support training and promoting opportunities for workers to move into new roles that will be created by the offshore wind industry.”

In October this year, Falck Renewables and BlueFloat entered into a partnership to install floating offshore wind farms off the coast of Italy.
