Fervo Energy has entered into a 396MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google to support the ongoing development of the Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) GeoCluster in Beaver County, Utah, US.

The deal is said to be the world’s largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date.

The Cape Station project is expected to begin operations in 2028.

Under the agreement, the electricity purchased by Google will support carbon-free power needs, potentially serving as a foundation for a data centre in Utah.

Fervo Energy will also provide Google with an option to expand its offtake by roughly 600MW, which could bring the total to nearly 1GW by June 2030.

The company noted that final data centre plans are subject to factors such as engineering feasibility, regulatory approvals and commercial conditions.

The PPA aims to introduce new around-the-clock power capacity at no added cost to existing ratepayers.

Fervo Energy CEO and co-founder Tim Latimer said: “This agreement reinforces that EGS is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure.

“As demand for reliable electricity grows, customers like Google need energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock and deliver where power is needed.

“This new PPA is part of our repeatable commercial model that enables us to meet customer needs and directly deliver clean, firm power to large electricity users. We are proud to do this work in close partnership with the communities of south-west Utah and with a partner that upholds our community-first values.”

The partnership between Fervo Energy and Google began with Project Red, a commercial pilot in Nevada that became operational in 2023.

This project supplies power to the Nevada grid, including Google’s data centres in the area.

In June 2024, Fervo also signed a 115MW PPA with Google and NV Energy, tied to the Clean Transition Tariff, designed to increase geothermal supply for Google in Nevada without impacting rates for other customers.

Google head of advanced energy Michael Terrell said: “The next chapter of advanced power generation technology is being written in Utah.

“This project will drive meaningful economic benefit to the local community and help catalyse long-term energy cost reductions by making enhanced geothermal more affordable and accessible.”
